What is hybrid flooring?
Hybrid flooring combines a rigid, waterproof core with a printed timber- or stone-look layer and a protective wear layer, usually with an attached acoustic underlay. It clicks together and floats over the subfloor.
- SPC (stone plastic composite) core — dense and rigid; the most common type, very stable and dent-resistant.
- WPC (wood plastic composite) core — slightly softer and warmer underfoot, and a bit quieter.
“Hybrid timber flooring” and “SPC hybrid” are both names for the same product family. The wear layer thickness and plank thickness drive most of the price difference between budget and premium ranges.

Sydney: hybrid suits humid coastal homes far better than laminate or solid timber, but installers still need proper expansion gaps. Melbourne: older homes in the inner north and west can have damp subfloors; moisture-test slabs, and check product suitability if you’re in a bushfire-rated area. Brisbane: use a moisture barrier even over raised Queenslander floors. Perth: intense sun through large west-facing windows can heat floors; choose a product rated for it and use blinds.
What’s not in the price
Hybrid boards are more forgiving than laminate, but a few costs still tend to be left off the headline price:
- Underlay — many hybrid boards come with underlay attached. If yours doesn’t, or your building needs an acoustic rating, it’s an extra line.
- Subfloor flatness — the rigid core bridges small dips, not big ones. Slabs with high spots or bumpy patches need grinding or levelling first.
- Moisture testing — a waterproof board doesn’t make a damp slab acceptable; manufacturers’ warranties usually still call for moisture readings, and sometimes a barrier.
- Expansion breaks — hybrid still expands in heat. Long open-plan runs or floors in front of large sun-facing glass may need a T-mould break, which adds trims.
- Removal, stairs and clean-up — taking up old flooring, stairs (priced per step), furniture moving, delivery and waste.
